The voice of Mercedes Sosa for the poetry of Armando Tejada Gómez. An analysis of interpretation as a contribution to the study of singing

This article deals with the musical performance of Mercedes Sosa through the analysis of fragments of songs with poetry by Armando Tejada Gómez, recorded in the years 1962 and 1967. The article reflects upon intertextuality in popular songs, and subsequently defines the criteria for analyzing the voice as a carrier of word and music. Some moments in the singer’s life are also mentioned in order to establish her contact with Tejada Gómez’s poetry. Meter, rhythmic accents and synalephas of the verses are analyzed. Subsequently, the article presents transcriptions of the selected fragments and identifies expressive resources in relation to phrasing, dynamic treatment, accentuations, sound extensions, tempo and tone decisions concerning the songs. Finally, the identified resources are considered along with alternatives for their approach as a contribution to the study of musical interpretation, based on the assessment of the word for the choice of vocal resources.
