“An Evening with Salvador Allende”: from a suspended milestone to a suspension of the milestone

By analyzing a pioneering musical event of international solidarity with Chile after the 1973 coup, this article approaches the mechanisms of omission that arise in the absence of a concrete historical inscription. The need to work this memory (Jelin, 2002), the paradoxes of artistic internationalism investigated by Giunta –particularly that which involves Latin America and the United States– (2008), and the imagined musical communities (Born and Hesmondhalgh, 2000) of Nueva Canción Chilena (New Chilean Song) and the U.S.’s folk revival, embodied in the relationship between Víctor Jara and Phil Ochs, are the frameworks that we use to establish the urgency of highlighting this event, in order to activate a network of other similar actions that still do not find space at present.
