Discursive Analysis of Two Paradigmatic Albums During the Brazilian Democratic Consolidation: Sobrevivendo no inferno (Racionais MC’s) and Brasil (Ratos de Porão)
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aims to conduct a discursive analysis of the hip hop and punk movements, using as references the albums Brasil, by Ratos de Porão, and Sobrevivendo no inferno, by Racionais MC’s, within the context of Brazil’s democratic consolidation. The research seeks to understand the impact of these movements as forces of resistance against the lingering oppressions of the military dictatorship, spanning the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, and to assess their revolutionary character. To this end, bibliographic research was conducted, establishing Norman Fairclough (2001) as a key author for the discursive analysis. Additionally, two critical theory authors, Walter Benjamin (1934) and Raymond Williams (1973), were employed to support the evaluation of the revolutionary nature of these movements. It was found that both movements played a central role in confronting the ills of capitalism, which emerged from the ruins of the dictatorship, standing out for their critical, revolutionary, and anti-hegemonic stance.
