Abstract

The following article explores the poetic and textual strategies used by Lima musicians and lyricists in the early decades of the 20th century. This generation, known as the Guardia Vieja, was characterized by the composition of waltzes and songs that drew on various forms of poetic material. This article explores the sources from which this group of lyricists drew, as well as the way in which these poems were utilized. The hypothesis is that the use of canonical poetry was interwoven with more complex forms of composition that cannot be explained solely through traditional poetic reading.
